Parent/carer support

Compass Changing Lives provides guidance to parents and carers around improving their knowledge and understanding of how best to support and improve their child’s mental health and wellbeing. We work with parents and carers of children and young people across Derby City and Derbyshire.

To make a request to access parent/carer support, please fill in the Request for Support form found below, or you can speak to one of the friendly team members by ringing us on 01332 315569.

Following the request for support with Compass Changing Lives, a practitioner will arrange a telephone screening to gather more knowledge before deciding if we are the right service for you and your family, and then work in collaboration to find the most suitable support.

We provide a selection of workshops and resources specifically for parents/carers to ensure you get the right support. These include:

Beyond behaviour group

A child’s difficulties can often present themselves at home rather than showing any signs in school. The Beyond Behaviour group is a 6-week workshop designed to teach parents and carers strategies to support their children to:

  • Reduce challenging behaviours
  • Regulate their emotions
  • Build confidence & independence
  • Communicate their feelings

Beyond Behaviour is aimed mainly at primary school ages and some secondary school ages, which address possible reasons for the child’s behaviours.

The group can be delivered digitally via Microsoft Teams, or face-to-face within school. Each session is an hour long and will be delivered on the same day, same time, each week. In some circumstances, we can deliver the sessions on a 1:1 basis – these adaptations will be considered on an individual basis and may be adapted to suit the needs of parents/carers at a mutually agreed time.

The sessions cover the following topics:

  • Child development
  • Understanding the functions of behaviour
  • Different strategies to manage challenging behaviours

The Beyond Behaviour group aims to provide a safe space to share difficulties and problem-solve together. Participation during the sessions is not necessary, but encouraged. Parents and carers will have the opportunity to share ideas, thoughts and ask questions with others.

Fear-Less Triple P (Online, 1:1 or groups)

Fear-Less Triple P is a programme that supports parents and carers to help their children (aged 6-14 years) recognise and cope effectively with their anxiety and fears. It can help the whole family break free from the stress and anxiety cycle.

The programme is suitable for parents and carers interested in coaching their children to become more emotionally resilient, and better able to express and manage uncomfortable or difficult emotions. It is also suited to parents and carers of children who have moderate to high levels of anxiety, that causes significant distress, or impacts on their everyday functioning.

Fear-Less Triple P aims to help parents and carers to:

  • Understand more about anxiety and how to respond to their child when they’re anxious
  • Set a good example of coping with anxiety
  • Coach their children to become more emotionally resilient
  • Develop a toolbox of strategies for helping children to manage their anxiety, based on proven principles
  • Choose the most effective ways to respond to their children’s anxiety

With Compass Changing Lives, Fear-Less Triple P is currently delivered via an online platform – ‘Fear-Less Triple P Online’. The beauty of Fear-Less Triple P Online is that it can be completed at your own pace to suit each family’s needs, routines and lifestyles.

Parents/carers will have their own unique code which will enable them to access the course, modules and material 24 hours a day, for a maximum of 365 days. The course consists of videos and interactive activities to aid learning, and is compatible with laptops/computers, smartphones and tablets.

Compass Changing Lives offer regular check-in meetings and additional support from the Families Practitioner, which can be arranged via Microsoft Teams or telephone at a mutually agreed time.

Fear-Less Triple P 1:1s or Groups will commence January 2024. These will be delivered by our Families Practitioner, either digitally via Microsoft Teams, or face-to-face, and will consist of 6-8 sessions. More details to follow in early January.
