Research has shown that for young children, attitudes about body shape and size may start as early as three or four years old. Being body positive can support mental and physical health by boosting confidence and helping children and young people to develop a healthy image of themselves.
In response to this, Compass Go are ready to launch a new innovation project in primary schools that will help give young people the knowledge they need to feel confident in managing life’s challenges as they arise, and the skills to do so. It will enable children to explore body image and self-esteem, and the importance of holistic wellbeing in relation to mental health and wellbeing.
The project, which is almost ready to launch and awaiting it’s new name (which will be chosen by children who have been involved in project planning from the very start), will see the delivery of whole year assemblies, workshops and targeted workshops to children in years 5 and 6. Workshops and assemblies will be based around our series of key themes in relation to wellbeing, where we will provide psycho-education on the topics, discuss the impact of each theme and explore skills to help maintain and empower these areas of our wellbeing. And to ensure the greatest impact, we will also provide wrap around support with the delivery of workshops for parent/carers and education staff.
Over the past few months the project team have been busy creating content for the project, meeting with schools to plan our interventions over the next two years, whilst also delivering focus groups within a few primary schools to create a project name and a logo. The team will include a project lead as well as a holistic wellbeing worker, which is a new role within Compass, designed to help support the delivery of the vision and ethos the project aims to uphold.
We can’t wait to get started, to provide education on body image, self-esteem and holistic well-being and support the mental health and well-being of young people in our region.
