Compass Phoenix attended the Healthy Schools Celebration Event at RHS Harlow Carr in Harrogate where we provide a workshop.

Pip Nix, Training and Consultation Worker, wrote: “Compass Phoenix supports schools in North Yorkshire, all of which are eligible to complete the ‘North Yorkshire Healthy Schools Awards’. Following the success of a similar event and the massive virtual event held in April this year we were invited back to run another wellbeing workshop. Rachael Askew (Team Leader) and Pip Nix (Training & Consultation Worker) attended to facilitate the ‘Wellbeing Warriors’ workshop.

80 pupils from 6 North Yorkshire & York primary schools attend the event and joined our workshop which we delivered 3 times throughout the day, with each group engaging well. We spoke about what wellbeing and how it is important for us to take care of our wellbeing. The children completed a Friendship Pyramid, looking at the important qualities of good friends. We shared ideas from the 5 Ways to Wellbeing of how we can build these into our lives. Finally the children were asked to design posters to promote wellbeing in their schools, some excellent posters made by the children (copies attached).

The children also attended workshops on ‘Having a Healthy Smile with the Harrogate & District NHS Oral Health team and ‘Gardens are Good For You’ with the RHS Education team. The children enjoyed activities during the lunch break including peddling the smoothy and energy bikes with North Yorkshire Rotters, badge making with North Yorkshire Youth and sampling healthy drinks and snacks from North Yorkshire Catering.

After lunch the schools in attendance were presented with their Healthy Schools Awards.

The main organisers of the event were Ruth Stacey, Healthy Schools Programme Manager and Clare Barrowman, Health & Wellbeing Advisor form the Healthy Schools team supporting schools to achieve awards.

Pip said about the day: “Empowering children and young people to be proactive at caring their own wellbeing embodies much of what Compass is.

“It was great fun getting to meet some of the pupils of the schools that we support and to explore the importance of wellbeing with them in such a fun way. The children gave such thoughtful contributions and engaged so well. I look forward to the next event!”

Ruth Stacey, Healthy Schools Programme Manager, said: “Thanks so much for your time at the Healthy Schools event yesterday.  Without your support and expertise we wouldn’t be able to run such fun packed events.”
